Inishowen Maritime Museum & Planetarium

Inishowen Maritime Museum & Planetarium is located at the Old Coast Guard station over looking Greencastle Harbour on the banks of the beautiful Lough Foyle. It is situated beside the Lough Foyle ferry entrance; this passenger/car ferry service runs between Greencastle and Magilligan, Co. Derry. Inishowen Maritime Museum & Planetarium is conveniently located in the old coastguard station, only 100 yards from the Lough Foyle ferry landing on Greencastle Harbour. The museum has an extensive collection of artefacts, photographs and memorabilia of all things maritime; fully rigged boats, currachs, Irish Skipper archives, Foyle Pilots, WWI / WWII, emigration and much more.

Among the Museum’s exhibits are a 19th century rocket cart used to aid survivors of wrecked ships; a traditional Fanad Curragh built with hazel rods, lathes and canvas; a wild fowling punt with a swivel gun and a Lough Foyle punt. The Museum also has a room devoted to the ships of the ill fated Spanish Armada which sunk off the Irish coast in 1588 and a room devoted to the part which Greencastle played in the history of emigration from Ireland in the 19th century.

Planetarium: 4 shows every day, suitable for all ages, inc. kids’ show for the youngest of viewers! Also available to hire for conference, presentations, laser light shows, meetings etc. Large stock of unique maritime giftware & fishing tackle shop. New museum tea room. Last Sunday of each month April to August, come see or our fantastic rocket launches!! A great day for all the family.
